September is Healthy Aging Month, designated to focus on some positive aspects of growing older. It is the time for seniors to take charge of their well-being by aging with a healthy body, including their feet! Here are some quick tips for older Americans to keep their feet healthy as they age.

Foot care for seniors is an important subject. As we age, we tend to experience more problems with our feet. However, it’s essential to know that foot issues are often signs of a deeper problem, such as diabetes or nerve problems. Never ignore foot pain. As soon as you notice something is wrong, seniors should contact an experienced podiatrist immediately.

Here are a few simple tips to keep in mind:

Keep your feet clean and dry.
Properly fitting and comfortable shoes are one of the essential aspects of good foot care. A shoe that causes too much pressure or friction or lacks cushion and support can generate serious foot and toe problems, not to mention cuts that can lead to infection.
Check your feet and toenails every day. Some seniors are unable to check their own feet daily. In that case, have someone else check them for changes.
Maintain good circulation to the lower extremities. Try to take frequent walks and avoid sitting for extended periods. Stretching can help as we
Apply lotion after washing and drying your feet. It can lessen the risk of drying and cracking.
Don’t walk barefoot, especially in public areas.
Loss of fat on your feet is common among It can make you more susceptible to foot pain. The fat under our feet absorbs shock when walking or running. In some cases, as the patient ages, that padding can deteriorate. Custom orthotics are typically recommended when this happens to help wherever extra padding is needed.
